Handsome Bottoms Up

for solo piano

This composition is based on a Taiwanese folk tune, Handsome Bottoms Up. At the time when the original tune was composed, there were a series of incidents in Taiwan between new immigrants from Mainland China and the aborigine. The original composer was using a drinking song style on the tune, and tried to ease the tension between two groups of island residences. In this piece I was trying to to exaggerate the drinking style in pianistic technique. The piece was written for pianist Jenny Lin as an encore piece for her concerto night with Taipei County Symphony Orchestra in 2003.
